A new book on publishing music independently and the process of getting your own publishing deal has been launched by Pepper Music Publishing, which has signed a deal with book publisher Macmillan.
Pepper Music has been a publisher of music and music publishing contracts since 2010, and it is now in a position to launch a book about publishing and publishing independently.
The book, called Pepper Music publishing: How to Get a Publishing Contract, covers everything from how to get your own publication deal, publishing your own music and how to set up your own website, and how that can be a source of income.
“There’s a lot of misconceptions about publishing contracts and the publishing industry,” Pepper Music chief executive David Meehan said.
“It’s really about making sure that your book is as accurate as possible, so we’re going to do that in the book.”
The book has been written by a team of experts who have spent a decade working with independent publishers, and include author John Smith, author of the best-selling book The New Digital Music Publishers Handbook.
It is expected to be published this year.
“It’ll be a really comprehensive guide for anyone who’s considering a publishing contract,” Mr Meehart said.
It includes advice on the best publishing practice, including how to work with agents, publishing publishers and music labels, and the best way to get signed to a publishing deal.
“We’ll have a whole chapter on publishing contracts, and then a chapter on the process,” Mr Smith said.
It covers everything you need to know about how to secure your own print and online publication contract, and includes tips on how to choose the right publishing agent and how best to set it up.
The publishing process is broken down into five steps: negotiating the publishing contract with the publishing agent, signing the publishing deal, negotiating the terms of the publishing, negotiating on a publishing agreement and publishing, and finally paying the publishing.
Mr Meehans team of independent publishers is now working with the Macmillon publishing company to develop the book.
“I think we’ve got a good idea of how to do this book, and we’re just in the process now of getting it to publishers,” he said.
Mr Smith said publishing was a “huge industry” and the industry needed to be more transparent.
“If you don’t have a good understanding of what it takes to run an independent publishing business, then there’s no way that you can make an informed decision about whether or not you should do it,” he added.
